Racing and Wagering Western Australia’s (RWWA) is pleased to announce the renowned veterinarian and animal welfare advocate Dr Garnett Hall is the WA Ambassador for GAP National Adoption day, taking place on Sunday 19 April.

The initiative sees all States coming together as part of a nation-wide push to promote and facilitate greyhounds as pets to the wider community, with last year’s event resulting in over 200 greyhounds finding a new home across Australia.

With his extensive experience in working with greyhounds, and having previously owned one himself, Dr Hall said he was thrilled to be part of an initiative promoting greyhounds as the wonderful pets that they are.

“Many people look at greyhounds and think they would need hours of exercise and a large property to look after them, but I am here to bust that myth – greyhounds are actually very lazy and low-maintenance. They can sleep for over 20 hours per day, and only require a 15-20 minute walk daily,” Dr Hall said.

“Despite their big appearance, they don’t need vast amounts of space, in fact they thrive in urban spaces. Greyhounds are very adaptable and are equally suited to large properties, suburban homes, units and even apartments.”

“Most importantly, greyhounds make wonderful companions. They are sweet natured, affectionate and loyal – and I really hope shining a light on their qualities will encourage more people to consider owning their very own gentle giant.”

RWWA General Manager Racing Charlotte Mills said the upcoming adoption day is an example of the industry’s commitment to ensuring the best levels of care are given to greyhounds both during and after their racing careers.

“This national initiative is a great opportunity for all governing bodies across Australia to come together and further promote greyhound pet ownership to the wider community,” Ms Mills said.

“We are pleased to welcome back Dr Hall as the WA Ambassador for 2020, following the successful 2019 campaign where all 48 greyhounds available at GAP’s Southern River facility were adopted in under two hours.”

The WA GAP Adoption Day will be held at the Greyhounds as Pets facility at 357 Furley Road, Southern River from 10am to 2pm.
